US Imposes Steep Tariffs on Indian Imports
The United States has officially implemented an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, effective August 27, 2025, raising the total duty to 50% on certain goods. This punitive measure, notified by the US Department of Homeland Security, applies to Indian products entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouses on or after 12:01 AM Eastern Daylight Time on August 27. The US administration has cited India's ongoing purchases of Russian oil as the reason for these heightened tariffs.
In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking on Monday, August 26, asserted India's determination to withstand the economic pressure, stating, "No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it." He further emphasized his government's commitment to protecting small entrepreneurs, farmers, and livestock rearers from any adverse impact. Amidst these trade tensions, senior officials from India and the US held a virtual '2+2 Intersessional Dialogue' on Monday, discussing bilateral ties in trade, investment, critical minerals, and defence cooperation.
