The Union Cabinet has approved two significant ropeway projects in Uttarakhand to enhance pilgrimage connectivity and sanctioned a ₹3,880 crore livestock health program. Concurrently, India released its first-ever comprehensive riverine dolphin estimation report, recording 6,327 dolphins, while NITI Aayog highlighted a 42% surge in women's financial engagement.

In a series of major decisions on March 6, 2025, the Union Cabinet and various government agencies announced several initiatives spanning infrastructure, conservation, and social development that are critical for competitive exam preparation.

1. Infrastructure: Parvatmala Pariyojana Expansion

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved two major ropeway projects in Uttarakhand under the National Ropeways Development Programme - Parvatmala Pariyojana. These projects aim to provide all-weather connectivity to high-altitude pilgrimage sites:

  • Sonprayag to Kedarnath: A 12.9 km ropeway with an estimated cost of ₹4,081.28 crore. It will reduce travel time from 8-9 hours to just 36 minutes.
  • Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib: A 12.4 km ropeway costing ₹2,730.13 crore. This will also provide access to the Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Both projects will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model using the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) mode.

2. Conservation: India’s First River Dolphin Census

The government released the findings of India’s first-ever comprehensive Riverine Dolphin Estimation report. Conducted under Project Dolphin by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), the survey recorded a total of 6,327 dolphins across the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Indus river systems. The Ganges River Dolphin (Platanista gangetica), India's National Aquatic Animal, is a key indicator of the health of the river ecosystem.

3. Agriculture: Livestock Health and Disease Control (LHDCP)

The Union Cabinet approved the revision of the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP) with an outlay of ₹3,880 crore for the 2024-2026 period. A new component called 'Pashu Aushadhi' was introduced to provide affordable generic veterinary medicines through PM-Kisan Samriddhi Kendras and cooperatives, aimed at boosting rural economies and animal productivity.

4. Economy & Social Development: NITI Aayog Report

NITI Aayog released a report titled “From Borrowers to Builders: Women’s Role in India’s Financial Growth Story.” Key highlights include:

  • A 42% rise in the number of women monitoring their credit scores as of December 2024.
  • Approximately 27 million women are now actively engaged in India's credit ecosystem, signaling a shift toward greater financial independence and literacy.

5. International Relations & Trade

  • India-US Ties: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that many of U.S. President Donald Trump's priorities, including a shift toward multi-polarity, align with India's strategic interests.
  • Trade Tensions: The Trump administration announced the imposition of reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods starting April 2, 2025, citing unfair trade practices.

6. Appointments & Science

  • Ajay Bhadoo has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).
  • DRDO successfully conducted high-altitude trials of the Indigenous Integrated Life Support System for the LCA Tejas aircraft, enhancing the safety of pilots at extreme altitudes.
