March 01, 2026 March 01, 2026 - Current affairs for all the Exams: India Current Affairs: Major Digital Reforms, Regional Diplomacy, and Historic Sports Feats (March 1, 2026)

India marks March 1, 2026, with significant transitions, including the launch of the 'RailOne' app for railway bookings and new SIM-binding rules for messaging platforms. Amid rising West Asia tensions, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged with Gulf counterparts, while domestically, Jammu & Kashmir celebrated a historic maiden Ranji Trophy title.

1. Digital and Infrastructure Reforms

Effective today, March 1, 2026, the Indian Railways has officially discontinued the UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) mobile app. All unreserved and local train ticket booking services have migrated to the new 'RailOne' App. Passengers are advised that existing R-Wallet balances will be transferred to the new platform provided they register with the same mobile number. Additionally, the government has implemented new SIM-binding rules for messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram to curb digital fraud; these apps will now be strictly linked to the user's SIM card and will cease to function if the SIM is removed.

2. Economic Updates and LPG Price Revision

Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have announced a reduction in the prices of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders by ₹28 to ₹31 across major metros, providing relief to the commercial sector ahead of the Holi festival. However, the prices for 14.2 kg domestic cylinders remain unchanged. In the banking sector, new UPI authentication rules have come into effect for high-value transfers, requiring multi-factor or biometric authentication beyond the standard UPI PIN.

3. International Relations and West Asia Crisis

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held urgent telephonic discussions with his counterparts from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Bahrain. The talks focused on the escalating tensions in the Gulf following reported strikes involving the US, Israel, and Iran. India has expressed deep concern over regional stability and the safety of the Indian diaspora. Consequently, Air India and Air India Express have suspended several westbound international flights and services to parts of the Gulf until further notice due to airspace disruptions.

4. Health and Science

Following its launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ajmer on February 28, the nationwide HPV vaccination drive has commenced today. The program aims to provide free vaccinations to girls aged 14 to prevent cervical cancer. Meanwhile, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has announced the theme for National Science Day 2026: "Women in Science: Catalyzing Viksit Bharat," emphasizing the role of gender inclusivity in India's development goals.

5. Sports: Historic Ranji Trophy Victory

In a landmark moment for Indian domestic cricket, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) secured its first-ever Ranji Trophy title. In the final concluded late on February 28, J&K defeated their opponents to lift the prestigious trophy for the first time in the tournament's 67-year history, sparking widespread celebrations across the Union Territory.
