Major Boost for Indigenous Medical Technology: MAHA-MedTech Mission Launched

In a significant move to strengthen India's medical technology ecosystem, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), in collaboration with the Gates Foundation, have launched the Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas (MAHA)-Medical Technology (MedTech). Announced on October 25, 2025, this five-year mission is backed by a total outlay of Rs 750 crore, aiming to fund approximately 50 projects. The initiative seeks to accelerate innovation in the medical tech sector, reduce dependence on costly imports, and ensure equitable access to affordable and high-quality medical technologies across the country. Funding will be provided to a diverse range of entities, including academic institutions, R&D centers, hospitals, startups, and MSMEs, with milestone-linked grants ranging from Rs 5-25 crore per project, and up to Rs 50 crore in exceptional cases.

Kerala Scientist Jayan N Honored with Vigyan Shri Award for Space Technology Contributions

Kerala scientist Jayan N has been conferred the prestigious Vigyan Shri award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to India's space technology development. Currently serving as the Project Director for the Next Generation Launch Vehicle at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) under ISRO, Jayan N played a pivotal role in the design and development of India's first indigenous cryogenic engine used in the GSLV program. His leadership was also instrumental in developing the CE-20 cryogenic engine, which powers the GSLV Mk III (LVM3) launch vehicle, currently India's most powerful rocket. The Vigyan Shri award is part of the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar, a top national honor in science and technology.

New Centres of Excellence for Critical Mineral Research

The Ministry of Mines has designated two more institutes, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and the Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET) Hyderabad, as Centres of Excellence (CoE) under the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM). This recognition, following approval on October 24, 2025, aims to boost research and development in critical minerals, which are vital for emerging sectors like clean energy, advanced technology, electronics, defense, and space. These CoEs will undertake innovative research to advance India's scientific and technological capabilities in this crucial area.

AI Integration, Gene Therapy, and New Antibiotic Mark Healthcare Advancements

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, highlighted the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in redefining diagnostics and patient care in India. Speaking on October 25, 2025, he emphasized a hybrid model that combines technological innovation with human empathy in healthcare. Furthermore, Dr. Singh announced India's first successful indigenous gene-therapy trial for Hemophilia, which demonstrated a significant 60-70 percent correction rate without post-therapy bleeding incidents. India has also developed its first indigenously discovered antibiotic, Nafithromycin, effective against resistant respiratory infections, particularly in diabetic and immunocompromised patients, marking a major stride in pharmaceutical innovation.

National Blockchain Framework Expands Reach for Enhanced Governance

India is significantly expanding the adoption of its National Blockchain Framework (NBF) to enhance transparency and strengthen digital trust across various governmental and public sectors. As of October 21, 2025, over 34 crore documents have been securely verified through this blockchain-based platform. The NBF, officially launched in September 2024, provides a unified architecture for deploying blockchain solutions, addressing challenges in traditional centralized databases by offering tamper-resistant, distributed ledger systems for greater data integrity and efficiency.

Towards Tech Independence: India's 7nm 'Shakti' Processor by 2028

Further solidifying its pursuit of technological independence, India is set to launch its first homegrown 7-nanometer 'Shakti' processor by 2028.
