India is abuzz with diplomatic activity as the Chinese Foreign Minister arrives for crucial trade talks. Domestically, the political landscape is shaped by the NDA's nomination of CP Radhakrishnan for Vice-President and the INDIA bloc's deliberations on their candidate. Meanwhile, severe weather, including cloudbursts and heavy rains, has caused casualties and disruptions in several states.

India's news cycle over the past 24-48 hours has been marked by a confluence of significant political, diplomatic, and environmental events.

Diplomatic and Trade Developments

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in New Delhi on Monday for key talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and NSA Doval. Discussions are expected to focus on a trade package that could include critical rare earth magnets, fertilizers, and pharmaceuticals, signaling a potential thaw in relations amidst global tensions. This visit comes as India faces challenges in its trade relations with the United States, with a proposed 50% US tariff casting a shadow over bilateral trade agreement talks. The sixth round of talks to finalize a bilateral trade agreement with the US has been postponed, with the US trade delegation reportedly expressing inability to visit India.

Political Landscape

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has announced Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan as their candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election. Following this, leaders of the INDIA bloc are set to convene to deliberate on their joint candidate for the vice-presidential election.

He also urged states to cooperate in implementing proposed next-generation GST reforms before Diwali, emphasizing their benefit to the poor, middle class, and businesses.

The political discourse also saw senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi commencing his 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' in Bihar, where he alleged "vote theft" by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The ECI, in turn, held a press conference to address these issues and rebut "misinformation" being spread. The Election Commission stated that the list of 65 lakh voters deleted from Bihar's electoral rolls was uploaded within 56 hours of a Supreme Court order.

Weather-Related Incidents and Disruptions

Heavy rainfall has led to significant disruptions across several parts of India. In Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district, a cloudburst triggered flash floods and landslides, resulting in at least seven fatalities, including five children, and injuries to four others. Rescue operations are ongoing, with officials reporting severe waterlogging in industrial areas and damage to roads and railway tracks.

Due to the persistent heavy downpour and IMD's red alerts, schools have been closed in several areas. All government and private schools in Jammu are closed on Monday, August 18.
