July 19, 2025 India Sees Key Developments Across Economy, Defence, and International Relations

In the last 24-48 hours, India has witnessed significant developments across various sectors. Economically, the nation continues its trajectory as a fast-growing economy with positive projections for GDP growth. Defence capabilities have been bolstered with successful missile tests and the commissioning of a new diving support vessel. On the international front, India engaged in key bilateral and multilateral exercises, while also navigating complex diplomatic issues. Social and governmental initiatives are also making headlines with new schemes and urban cleanliness rankings.

Economy & Business:

India's economic outlook remains robust, with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) projecting a 6.5% GDP growth for FY 2025-26, driven by strong domestic demand and government capital expenditure. Morgan Stanley forecasts India to remain the fastest-growing economy globally, with real GDP growth at 5.9% in 2025 and 6.4% in 2026. India has also surpassed Japan to become the world's 4th largest economy in 2025. Private equity firm KKR noted India's economic resilience, reform momentum, and robust domestic demand, positioning it as a compelling strategic location within emerging markets. The Indian Overseas Bank has reduced its Marginal Cost of Funds Based Lending Rate (MCLR) by 10 basis points across all tenures, effective July 15, 2025. The Union Government has launched the Assistance for Deployment of Energy Efficient Technologies in Industrial Establishments (ADEETIE) scheme with a budget of ₹1,000 crore, aimed at boosting energy efficiency in MSMEs. Additionally, the Cabinet approved the 'PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana' with a ₹24,000 crore outlay to boost agriculture in 100 under-performing districts.

Defence & Security:

India successfully conducted trials of the Akash Prime, an upgraded variant of the Akash Weapon System, at high altitude in Ladakh on July 16, 2025, effectively destroying two Aerial High-Speed Unmanned Targets. Furthermore, India successfully tested Prithvi-II and Agni-I ballistic missiles in Odisha. India's first indigenously built Diving Support Vessel, Nistar, was commissioned on July 18, 2025, at Visakhapatnam, marking a significant maritime achievement. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) received the second GE F404 engine from GE Aerospace, critical for powering India's indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk 1A.

International Relations:

The Indian Navy is participating in SIMBEX 2025, a bilateral naval drill with Singapore, marking the 32nd edition of the exercise to improve maritime cooperation and interoperability. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the 2nd BIMSTEC Ports Conclave in Visakhapatnam, focusing on "Navigating the Future: Blue Economy, Innovation and Sustainable Partnerships." External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on July 14, 2025, discussing the trajectory of India-China bilateral relations. The Chinese embassy in New Delhi stated that the succession of the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama is a "thorn" in China-India relations. Tensions between India and Pakistan remain a concern, particularly regarding Kashmir and the Indus Waters Treaty, following fighting in May 2025. ISRO is set to conduct key space experiments through the Axiom-4 Mission. Google has launched a special offer providing free access to Gemini AI Pro for Indian college and university students for one year. A new sickle cell anaemia screening test kit, set to cost less than Rs 100, will be launched soon.

National & Social Affairs:

In a historic policy decision, the Maharashtra Cabinet approved agricultural status for livestock and poultry farming, making it the first Indian state to take this step. The Bihar government announced free electricity for domestic consumers, providing up to 125 units per month, effective from August 1, 2025, benefiting over 16.7 million households. In the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 rankings, Indore retained its title as the cleanest city for the eighth consecutive year, while Bengaluru improved its rank from 125 to 36, and Vijayawada secured the 4th position. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers of deceased citizens to clean the national database.
